APC Cross Channel With Motorola PTP600 Wireless Link
APC Solutions (UK) Ltd has proved that a high speed wireless link can operate efficiently across the English Channel, opening up possibilities for businesses that need cost effective cross border
communications.
The proof of concept test was carried out on 2nd January 2008 between the South Foreland Lighthouse site at Dover, Kent, and the Monument to the Dover Patrol at Escalles near Calais in France – a distance of 34 kilometres. Using Motorola’s point to point broadband kit (PTP600), APC Solution’s objective was to test the feasibility of setting up links between companies that operate on this side of the Channel and those in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. This type of link will be particularly appropriate for freight and shipping companies, many of which are based in coastal locations and need to communicate across busy waterways.
The site of the test – the South Foreland Lighthouse – is a distinctive Victorian structure on the well known White Cliffs of Dover, now owned by the National Trust. Interestingly, it was the site of Marconi’s wireless experiments in 1889 and the place Faraday chose to pioneer the first electrically powered lights. “It seemed a fitting location for us to test out modern day communication; no doubt both Faraday and Marconi would be fascinated to see how far science and technology have developed” says APC Solutions Director, David Bell.
APC Solutions expect several customers to show interest in the fact that they have been able to demonstrate that a wireless link can be set up and operational within a few hours. The link provides high quality, fast connectivity for voice and data and comes in at a fraction of the cost of more traditional technology such as leased lines.
The test carried out on 2nd January 2008 looks like it will be the first of many such connections that APC set up for their customers.
